How To Use Treats To Help Raise A Great Dog

Yellow Lab Laying In The Kitchen Under A Table

We're all familiar with the concept that positive reinforcement is used to promote good behavior. The more that reinforcement occurs, through treats and other rewards, the more that behavior is strengthened. This doesn’t limit your treat giving to only when you’re teaching your dog to sit or stay. If you’re gone for most of the day at work and you come home to find Fido hasn’t chewed anything or taken any naps on furniture he shouldn’t be on, a reward is a great idea. On the other hand, if you know you’re going to be gone all day, leaving your dog with something to chew on or keep him busy all day might help him to not dread your leaving, knowing that he’ll have something to keep his attention while you’re gone. There are a number of reasons to treat your dog and we have a number of things to treat him with!

What amount of treats is healthy for my dog?

Purina Pet Foods breaks treats into five categories: rewards, treats, biscuits, chews, and health treats. Rewards are smaller, meat-based treats used mostly during training. Your dog shouldn’t get more than 10% of his daily calories through this category. General treats shouldn’t exceed more than 15% of your dog’s daily dietary requirement. Biscuits can be fed as a snack or added to canned food. They can help clean your dog’s teeth and can account for up to 15% of your dog’s total diet. Chews are great for strengthening your dogs teeth and keeping them busy while you’re away. Health treats are specifically designed to support healthy bodies, with additional benefits such as vitamins and minerals.
