It’s easy to become confused as to the differences between hemp oil and CBD oil. The terms are used interchangeably within CBD companies, and that’s because hemp oil is derived from the stalks and stems of the hemp plant, and includes cannabinoid. With CBD not always derived from industrial hemp, it may end up containing THC if it comes from marijuana plants.

Where your hemp oil is derived from is important when it involves any CBD pet products. Pets need to avoid THC, with the legal amounts from hemp plants being 0.03%. If you’re wanting to totally avoid even minimal amounts of THC in all your CBD pet products, it’s best to opt for CBD isolate pet products that are made for pets by reputable companies and veterinarians. CBD isolate pet products will yield a 99% pure high-grade cannabidiol, which is 100% THC free.

Not All CBD Products Are Effective for Pets

Purchasing veterinarian-approved CBD pet products make a lot of sense today! According to Cornell University veterinary researcher, Joseph Wakshlag who studies therapeutic uses for the compound, there may not be beneficial value to many of the CBD products being sold today.

He adds “You'd be astounded by the analysis we've seen of products on the shelf with virtually no CBD in them,” “Or products with 2 milligrams per milliliter, when an effective concentration would be between 25 and 75 milligrams per milliliter. There are plenty of folks looking to make a dollar rather than produce anything that’s really beneficial,” via Times-Union.

The Latest in CBD Research

Plenty of recent CBD studies indicate the health benefits of CBD for pets. Science Daily cites a new 2019 study from Colorado State University where Dr. McGrath and colleagues found that 89% of dogs treated in this study with CBD oil, had a reduction in the frequency of seizures.

He adds that “The CBD product used in the study was derived from a hemp plant, which has 0.3% or less of the psychoactive component of cannabis, THC. The compound is not considered marijuana and can be used for research purposes based on the 2014 United States Department of Agriculture Farm Bill,” via Science Daily.

These findings highlight the medical benefits of CBD hemp oil on seizures. They also show that there is a correlation between how much CBD oil is used and the degree of seizure reduction.

“In addition to the distinct reduction of seizures in the group of dogs that received CBD oil, McGrath saw a significant association between the degree of seizure reduction and the amount of CBD concentration in the dog's blood.”

Harvard Health Blog says that CBD applied on the skin could help lower pain and inflammation stemming from arthritis. That said, another interesting CBD study on the pharmacokinetics of CBD administration found that “CBD induces antidepressant-like effects comparable to those of imipramine. These effects of CBD were probably mediated by activation of 5-HT1A receptors,” via PubMed- NCBI.

These CBD products are selling today because the federal government has not yet established standards for CBD pet products, to help pet parents understand if it will work on their pets, and how much to give. That said, it’s important to consider only purchasing veterinary-approved CBD pet products or CBD products that are sold by reputable and longstanding pet companies with a history behind them.

As usual, it’s necessary to consult with your veterinarian before going out and purchasing any CBD oil for dogs. This is to ensure that a full diagnosis is made first and foremost, and secondly, that the correct health condition is treated either with traditional pharmaceuticals or a combination of both pharmaceuticals and CBD. CBD pet products are not a reason to forego veterinary treatment and care.

 What is Hemp Oil?

Phytocannabinoid cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychoactive molecule found in both marijuana and hemp. Most CBD pet products come from the hemp plant and contain less than 0.3% THC.

Full-spectrum extract offers CBD and the complete range of cannabinoids that may yield additional therapeutic health benefits to both people and pets.

Weedley – owned by Gour Medical, a French veterinary healthcare company – together with PetPace, the makers of a smart health-monitoring collar for pets, announced a new clinical study regarding the efficacy of CBD in the treatment of osteoarthritis-associated pain in dogs. Both companies believe in pursuing high-quality clinical studies about the use of CBD oil for pet health.

Hemp oil comes from the petals, seeds, and leaves of the hemp plant. It’s a natural supplement that is 100% safe for your pets when administered in the correct potency and dosage from a reputable or veterinary endorsed high-quality CBD hemp pet product.

Hemp CBD oil has low levels of THC, and offers vitamins C, A, E, beta carotene and high levels of CBD for a therapeutic effect. It’s a non-euphoric product that is extracted by CO2 usage and distilled into a liquid. It’s non-toxic, safe and a natural nutraceutical when containing pure hemp oil.
