Using CBD Oil for Dogs: FAQ 2022

Big Dogs Playing In A Courtyard on Bricks

With the growing popularity in CBD as a means to naturally help many ailments, it is natural that there have been many questions asked about CBD oil for dogs. Many people want to help their dogs health no matter what but some are just unsure about the products they are buying. We are here to help answer some of the more common questions we have received about CBD oil for dogs and help you decide if it is right for your pooch!

What is CBD?

CBD or cannabidiol is a compound found in the hemp plant and is classified as a cannabinoid as a general term. This CBD compound is also found in certain forms of medical marijuana and is the reason for some of its health benefits. The way it is extracted from the hemp plant is a technique called cold pressing that ensures premium quality. CBD can come in the form of a tincture as an oil, in a product such as a coconut or salmon oil as an additive, or in a treat.

How does CBD work?

Both humans and dogs utilize CBD in the same way through what is referred to as the endocannabinoid system. This is a part of the nervous system that actually picks up this CBD compound and redistributes it throughout the body where it is needed.

Is CBD safe for dogs?

Yes! CBD oil for dogs is a natural substance that works with the body so it is very safe! This being said there is still a possibility of overdosing which can lead to illness related to vomiting and diarrhea. The amount needed to overdose is very high so this is a very rare occurrence.

Some dogs do not react well to the substance as well and could suffer from symptoms similar to allergic reactions. If your dog reacts poorly to CBD you should seek assistance from your veterinarian immediately.

Does CBD get my dog high?

No! The great thing about CBD is that is a unique compound meaning there is nothing else in it. CBD contains less than .03% THC which is the compound found in medical marijuana that gives you the psychoactive effects. CBD extracted from the hemp plant will always have these trace amounts of THC but because they are so little it has no harmful effects for your dog.

Is CBD oil for dogs legal?

If CBD comes from the hemp plant it is completely legal in all 50 states! It is common to find local CBD shops here and there and many online pet retailers are now beginning to carry CBD oil for dogs on their websites. If you are interested in purchasing some, our favorite brand is this CBD infused coconut oil by natural doggie.

How much CBD should I give my dog?

The amount of CBD you should give your dog depends on a few different aspects such as how big your dog is, how old your dog is, what you are using CBD to treat, and ultimately what is recommended by the product itself. Many products will have dosage recommendations on the label to ensure your dog is getting the right amount. If this is not present we recommend visiting your veterinarian to ensure you are doing everything properly.

What does CBD help?

There are many benefits to CBD and many of these have been studied in recent years proven to be true, some, however, are still being tested and are not fully discovered yet.

These benefits include:

  • Seizure reduction for both amount and severity
  • Pain relief
  • Cancer and tumor cell prevention
  • Arthritis
  • Anxiety
  • Blood disorders

Just to name some of the more prevalent ones.

The Benefits of CBD oil for dogs

How long does CBD take to start working?

CBD Usually takes anywhere from 5-30 min to start working on dogs, If you see no change after a half hour you can try giving them another recommended dosage. This will still be way under the amount of CBD required to overdose a dog as it is often never reached.

How should I give my dog CBD?

This depends entirely on the product you are using, If it is a treat then simply give them the recommended amount. If it is a tincture you can administer it directly to their mouth or even into their food for an easy fix. For products containing CBD in them treat it as you would that product normally and you should have no problem.

What CBD product do you recommend?

After trying out many different CBD products for dogs we have decided that our favorite as of right now is this CBD infused coconut oil by Natural Doggie. It is unlike your conventional tincture but still allows the flexibility of being an additive or being given direct. A nice bonus that goes with this is that our dogs love the taste of coconut oil so it is super easy to get them to enjoy it without any hassle.
