H20 Facts - Best way to keep dog Hydrated this summer

When summer comes, it's natural to want to get everyone out of the house and enjoy as much sun as possible, Fido included. Whereas spending more outdoor time with your dog can be a great source of adventure and fun, it's essential to bear in mind that the soaring temperatures can be slightly harsh on its body and can even lead to dehydration and heat stress.

Before you and your dog head into the sun, here are a few tips that can help you keep him hydrated and cool.

Carry Water Every Time You Head Out

In the summer, your dog can go through a bowl of water faster than you would expect. Therefore, when heading out, it's vital that you grab a bottle of fresh water and a clean bowl so that your dog can drink up even  when you are both on the move.

Switch to Wet Food

If your dog’s usual food is kibble, consider adding water to it. This can go a long way into keeping your pet hydrated.

Keep Multiple Sources of Fresh Water in Your Home

If you prefer enjoying the sunshine within your home, ensure that you provide different water stations around your home for your pup. This ensures that he has a continuous supply of fresh water even when one source runs out. Keep the bowls clean to prevent bacteria growth.

Give Ice cubes as Treats

Add ice cubes into the dog’s water to keep it refreshingly cool through the day. Alternatively, you can freeze some blueberries, peas, or Beer Paws Beer Singles and give it to your dog as treats to help him cool off.

Hydrate During Exercise

When exercising your pup in the summer heat, ensure that you give him small amounts of water after every 15-20 minutes. This will help keep him from dehydration and overheating. Note that you have to let him stop panting before allowing him to drink.

Signs of Dehydration and Overheating in Dogs

  • Drooling, excessive panting & sticky saliva
  • Floppy skin that takes long to snap back after being pulled
  • Fatigue and dizziness
  • High temperature

Keep your dog hydrated this summer with the above tips and take pleasure in the adventure.
