You've heard about the health benefits coconut oil can provide for you, but what about benefits for your dog? It turns out that antiviral, antimicrobial, and antibacterial coconut oil can be important for Fido, too!

At first, add 1/4 of a teaspoon of coconut oil for smaller dogs and puppies or 1 tsp per day for large dogs into their food dishes. Gradually work up to 1 teaspoon per 10 lbs of body weight.

Since coconut oil kills bacteria, fungi, parasites, yeasts, and viruses, those detoxifying effects can cause diarrhea, fatigue, headache, and flu-like symptoms. Cut back on the amount and divided doses throughout the day if your dog experiences any symptoms.

Here are 10 reasons coconut oil should be in your dog's menu:

Reduces Odor

Coconut oil can leave Fido's breath fresher and prevent oral infections. Apply the oil topically to moisturize and de-stink his skin and coat at the same time!

Maintains Brain Health

Coconut oil may keep your dog's brain sharp as he ages. According to the Healthy Pets with Dr. Karen Becker website, "Medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) have been shown to improve brain energy metabolism and decrease the amyloid protein buildup that results in brain lesions in older dogs. Coconut oil is a rich source of MCTs."

Boosts Metabolism

According to Shape.com, MCTs can aid in weight loss.

Improves Bone Health

Coconut oil can help your dog's body absorb more calcium and magnesium which strengthens bone health.

Heals Skin

Coconut oil will moisturize and nourish your pet's coat -- it may even help eczema. It ma also prevents infection, so spread coconut oil on:

  • stings
  • bites
  • rash
  • wounds

Tip: If your dog wants to lick the oil off, wrap or cover the area until the oil is absorbed.

Reduces Weight and Increases Energy

If Fido has less weight to carry around, pain from any arthritis and joint issues may be alleviated.

Improves the Digestive System

Oil regularly added to your dog's diet may aid digestion and improve nutrient absorption.

Strengthens the Immune System

Bacteria and illness may be prevented with coconut oil as it contains doses of:

  • antimicrobial lipids
  • lauric acid
  • capric acid
  • caprylic acid

Aids in Recovery from Kennel Cough

Antiviral agents may help your dog recover from Kennel Cough.

Prevents and Treats Yeast Infections

Candida and other yeasts may be lessened by the lauric acid found in coconut oil.

There are so many other potential benefits from coconut oil!
