Hemp has been around since ancient times, originating way back in China since around 2800 BC. The plant proved beneficial for pain relief, becoming popular in Europe from the 16th century because of the long tradition of medicinal use. Today it is proving highly beneficial for seizures in dogs too.

What is a seizure?

Don’t you wonder why a dog gets seizures in the first place? If you are a dog owner, you should learn what the symptoms of a seizure are, how you can provide the right first aid to your pet. If your young pup gets diagnosed with epilepsy he will need long-term care. In a dog, seizures are known asidiopathic epilepsy when the vet can’t find the cause of the seizure, but your dog continues to experience them. Not all people or dogs that have seizures have epilepsy though. In fact, “Idiopathic” means the cause can’t be located. But there are treatments, such as hemp oil, which can result in your pets having happy, normal lives. What could be some reasons for seizures in pets?

  • An underlying health condition such as kidney or liver disease, even cancer
  • Maybe an electrolyte deficiency
  • The use of topical tick and flea products
  • Pesticides and herbicides
  • Head injury
  • Vaccines

If your dog has regular seizures, epilepsy might be the culprit. Epilepsy happens when there are bursts of uncontrolled electricity in a dog’s brain. Fortunately, this can be controlled with hemp oil.

  • Epilepsy in your dog might be scary for you, but imagine for the dog!
  • Make a point of always checking when your dog has a seizure because extended seizures can be life-threatening – it is important to note the time span between seizures. When your dog has a seizure, write down how long the seizure lasts, how the dog behaves, as well as the time and the date – you will give these to your vet. He will make a record of this to work out a treatment plan.
  • Your vet will want to know about your dog’s history and take samples of the dog’s blood.
  • Epilepsy is also unpredictable and it is not always easy to tell whether the treatments will be effective, whether they can hurt your dog, or whether they just seem pointless.
  • Don’t take any advice from your friends and family; only a qualified medical professional should assess your dog and advise – you need to follow his instructions to the tee. As mentioned above, a treatment that many vets recommend today for seizures is hemp CBD oil for dogs.

Hemp oil vs THC

  • Hempseed oil comes from varieties of Cannabis sativa which don’t contain any significant amounts of THC, which is the psychoactive element found in the cannabis plant.
  • Hemp oil comes from the seeds which are cleaned to 99.99% before the seeds are pressed. There is absolutely no THC in the hemp seed, but there might be trace amounts of it in the oil when manufacturing takes place. The lack of THC in hemp oil is the reason it can be purchased legally.
  • THC can be harmful to pets, which you don’t want. If too much THC is administered, it can actually be toxic for a pet. It is highly recommended that youavoid the use of products with THC in them.
  • You need to start with the lowest dose of hemp oil, gradually increasing the dosage according to the vet’s instructions. The amount of hemp oil to give to your dog will be determined by his weight. Usually, the dose to start with would be in the vicinity of 0.05 mg/kg/day but you need to check with your holistic vet.
