The Dachshund

Short haired brown dachshund playing in the yard

There are only a few pups that could be seen as iconic, but the Dachshund is one of the most recognizable dogs in America. Their long, lithe bodies and adorably short legs have garnered them the nickname “Weiner dog” and have cemented them as a classic fuzzy friend for many families. With a large personality, an independent nature, and a unique look, the Dachshund is one of the most fun puppers to have around. They come in a variety of sizes, with most averaging out at 8 or 9 inches tall. They also come with multiple types of fur, and each type of Dachshund is unique and special in its own way.

History of the Dachshund

The Dachshund was originally bred in Germany, specifically to hunt badgers. Their name, in fact, translates as “badger dog.” The Germans eventually produced two sizes, the larger still used for hunting badgers and wild boar while the smaller puppers were used to hunt foxes. Because they were bred to fight larger, fierce creatures, there is wild bravery to these pups and they’ll often stand up to animals much bigger than themselves. They were introduced to American dog lovers in the 1880s and have continued to be popular ever since.

Common Health Information

When taken care of properly, a Dachshund can live between 12 and 16 years. Regular checkups with a veterinarian are important, and your pup will appreciate it! Dachshunds are popular dogs, but there are a few health concerns to keep a wary eye out for. Because of the way these adorable puppers are built they are unfortunately prone to back issues. It’s important to make sure they’re eating regularly and that they’re getting plenty of exercises in so that they don’t develop a belly! Their back issues can extend to weakened vertebrae and protrusions, known as Intervertebral Disc Disease, and it can be very painful for your pup. A healthy weight for your pup will range from between 16 to 32 pounds, depending on the size, and it’s important to consistently maintain this so they can be happy and healthy!

Their stubby legs, while adorable, also leave them prone to issues with their hips and kneecaps. Patella Luxation, loose kneecaps, can result in pain for your dog. Like their back issues, proper diet and exercise can help to prevent. Hip Dysplasia, an issue that stems from the hip not properly fitting into the socket, is another common problem that arises from the breed’s build. Aches and pains from these issues could be treated with CBD oil, a calming supplement that will ease their lives. Be sure to consult with a vendor or veterinarian to understand the proper dosage for your pup.

Lastly, Dachshunds are prone to issues with their eyes and ears. Later in life, they can develop cataracts and degenerative diseases that can result in blindness. They can also develop ear infections if they are not kept properly cleaned. Be sure to consult with a veterinarian if you’re worried about any of these issues developing in your Dachshund. Proper care and a healthy lifestyle will help your furry friend live a happy life!

Grooming Instructions

Because of the different styles of Dachshund fur, there are a variety of ways to care for them. The long-haired pups need a good brushing daily to take care of their hair, while the short-haired dogs will need it only on occasion but tend to shed more. There is also a wire-haired breed of Dachshund and they require a stripping twice per year. A stripping involves taking a wire brush and gently running it through their fur, both forward and back, to remove dead hair. This will keep your pupper’s coat comfortable during the year!

You should also make sure you bathe your furry companion at least once per week, possibly more if you notice any skin conditions. The pups will appreciate your help in keeping their coats clean and healthy!

Personality

As mentioned, these dogs can be brave little adventurers! Bred to hunt animals larger than they are, much of that spunk and boldness remains and you will often see your pup stand up to a  dog much bigger than itself. Stubborn, silly, and energetic, your Dachshund friend will be difficult to train but once you’ve taken the time they’re wonderfully loyal and obedient dogs.

Dachshunds are known to make wonderful watchdogs, loyal to their family and friends but suspicious of new people or pups. They’ll help keep an eye on your home and your safety.

These puppers are also great with children as long as they aren’t played with too aggressively. When properly trained and introduced to the family, these fuzzy friends can be an excellent family companion that will provide years of joy and comfort for their humans.

They also happen to be goofy little pups as well! Dachshunds can have an almost clown-like personality, and are often goofy and always ready to have fun. Their loyalty to their family comes with a fun and playful personality as well.

Energy Level

These goofy little puppers are quite lively! While far from the most hyperactive of pups, as well as the potential to make a great lapdog, their playful personalities make for a pet that needs plenty of exercises. Make sure they’re getting at least an hour a day, whether on short walks or a game of fetch. With the Dachshund’s potential health issues, plenty of exercises is important and can help them stay strong and healthy!

Diet

Your furry friend will need a regular feeding schedule to give them the highest quality of life! Most small dog foods are perfect for your pupper, but keeping an eye on the ingredients can be important. Most balanced dog foods contain 50% meat and 50% vegetables. Proper diet is especially important for Dachshunds, as they are already prone to back problems and if they develop too much weight around the middle this can get worse. Keep an eye on how much exercise they’re getting in comparison to how much they’re eating, and your pupper will be a happy companion!

Fun, playful, and loyal, the Dachshund has become an iconic dog that maintains its popularity to this day. It’s important to keep an eye on your pup’s diet and health, but as long as you do that you’ll be rewarded with a fun-loving and caring dog for many years!
