CBD Drops or Dog Treats - Which One is Best for Your Dog?

As our understanding grows around the numerous health benefits of cannabidiol (CBD) products for our dogs, the question that often comes to mind is whether our pets would benefit most from CBD tinctures or dog treats?

The demand for alternative options instead of traditional pharmaceuticals has increased over the past couple of years. Combining both traditional meds with cannabidiol may also be beneficial for your pet, and should always be discussed with your veterinarian.

Today, full-spectrum hemp CBD pet products   are popular as natural pet supplements, when developed specifically for pets. The good news here is that many of these CBD pet products are veterinarian-formulated with zero-THC hemp, and are offered as organically-grown, and non-GMO CBD supplements. This means that they’re 100% safe for your pet. But what about efficacy?

What is CBD Oil?

Hemp-derived CBD oil (cannabidiol) for dogs is very popular, and is in the best seller supplement category, followed by savory CBD dog treats and edibles. That said, you’ll need to question whether the product you choose uses an isolate or a full-spectrum oil.

With isolates, you’ll have more control overdosage and versatility. On the other hand, with a full-spectrum oil, you’ll have a larger range of potential health benefits.

There are numerous premium full plant hemp plant extract products that don’t carry the CBD letters on the packaging. These products are labeled premium hemp oil extract products.

CBD is a non-psychotropic phytocannabinoid and offers both therapeutic and medicinal purposes for humans and pets. CBD has natural ingredients, is safe, and is derived from hemp and cannabis. Most CBD dog treats and tinctures will use CBD from hemp. That said, there is no “high” and your dog will not consume THC or tetrahydrocannabinol, resulting in psychoactive effects with your dog getting “high”.

Pros and Cons of CBD Drops & CBD Dog Treats for dogs

As our understanding of CBD pet products grows due to the numerous health benefits it can provide for both pets and their pet parents, taking a holistic approach to our dog’s health care means opting for safe and natural pet supplements that may improve the quality of your dog’s life.

The most important take to all of this is that it’s best to consult with your veterinarian first, prior to administering CBD oil to your dogs for any health condition, no matter how minor. This is because CBD may lower blood pressure, act as a blood thinner, and may also interact with certain medications that your dog is on.

With all the different potencies and CBD pet brands out there on the market, it would be good to seek out good veterinary advice. That way you can be sure that if your pooch has a serious medical condition, that it’s diagnosed and treated properly by a veterinarian first. You can then discuss the benefits of CBD dog treats or tinctures, and discuss as to which would be most beneficial for your dog’s health condition, age, or anxiety level.

CBD Potency and Dosage in Tinctures and Dog Treats

We adore our dogs and know that they would respond well to a CBD supplement. Organic CBD supplements with no fillers have significantly fewer product doses. Since you’re going to want a natural CBD supplement, your dog’s body will have to work less hard in eliminating what it does not need. If any supplement has fillers, the products are not as expensive, but the dosing will need to be much larger.

Also, if you’re opting for natural organic CBD supplements, you’re not reducing the level of nutrients that the body absorbs. So all in all, the use of CBD supplements whether it’s a tincture or a treat needs to encompass non-GMO, be certified organic with no chemicals added, and have no contaminants like heavy metals or pesticides present in the CBD product.

Regular Veterinary Care is Key to Your Dog’s Health

CBD offers a health solution and benefit to people and pets alike. It helps with allergies, joint pain, cancer, seizures, cardiac conditions, digestive and skin issues, sleeplessness, depression and much more!

Let’s look at why your holistic veterinarian is key to helping you find the correct and most effective CBD dosage. Your veterinarian should also help you choose the right CBD product for your pet. Even if your dog feels better after using CBD, you should still consult with your veterinarian to address any underlying health issues and to prevent a recurrence.

Think potency, certificate of analysis (COA), efficacy, safety, contaminants, and effective dosage! It may be 100% safe, but you want the best veterinary care for your dog, and that means regular veterinary care and treatment throughout your dog’s life with or without CBD.

That said, you may find that by consulting with your veterinarian, you may also be able to help your pets enjoy the benefits of cannabidiol in the right potency and dosage for your dog’s particular health condition. This would mean treating a condition more effectively and safely.

All-in-all, your veterinarian will be able to advise you as to whether CBD should be used in conjunction with traditional meds for your dog’s condition or alone, after a full physical with a diagnosis.

CBD Drops or Dog Treats for Thunder & Noise Phobia with Anxiety

Working together with your veterinarian is essential when treating a dog that has a medical condition, even if it’s only for anxiety or thunder phobia. There may be an underlying health condition with plenty of pain.

Though with something like thunder phobia, a new study has gained insight into how domestic dogs react to noises. “The results suggest that the characteristics of dogs, their early environment, and exposure to specific noises are involved in the development of fear responses to noises,” says Dr. Rachel Casey, who led the study at theSchool of Veterinary Sciences, University of Bristol,” viaClaudia Bensimoun, Animal Wellness magazine.”

Dr. Casey explains that almost half the people interviewed reported their dogs showed at least one behavioral sign of typical fear when exposed to noises such as fireworks, thunder, and gunshots, even though only a quarter reported their dogs were fearful of noises.

The most commonly reported behavioral responses included vocalizing, trembling, shaking, hiding and seeking people. Fear responses to loud noises from fireworks, gunshots, and thunder appear to commonly co-occur, suggesting generalization between these stimuli.

Interestingly enough, many responses to less salient sounds, such as traffic and TV noises, occurred with other signs of fear or anxiety. However, responses to fireworks, gunshots, and thunder did not commonly co-occur with separation-related behavior or behaviors linked to fear or anxiety.”

That said, pet parents can prepare ahead of time with thunder phobia, fireworks and other stressful noises, since giving CBD treats has shown to be helpful when easing fear and anxiety in dogs. On the other hand, if the storm is totally unexpected and strikes suddenly, it may be best to opt for an all-natural, premium-quality CBD tincture for pets that are absorbed much faster, resulting in a more rapid effect.

To better understand how CBD drops and treats work, we’ve come up with a comparative list to make CBD choices for pet products much easier for everyone.

 CBD Drops or Treats?

With CBD tinctures for dogs, you get to give the correct dosage when needed, and with CBD dog treats you’ll have to wait for your furry best friend to consume the CBD dog treat first, and then to digest it.

CBD tinctures allow for full dosage control, and for veterinarians and pet parents to tweak the dosage for maximum efficacy for a specific health condition. Absorption time is also fastest with CBD tinctures, whereas with treats, they have to get digested first, then after that, the CBD oil gets absorbed. Here’s the take with both.

  • CBD oil interacts with the endocannabinoid system and must be administered in the correct doses to be effective.
  • You can start off with the lowest CBD tincture dosage first, and slowly increase as your pets get used to it.
  • Purity and consistency in CBD oil are very important. Your CBD oil should not be cloudy or gunky. When opting for a CBD tincture you’ll be able to control calories, purity, and potency, as well as damages to cannabinoids during the cooking process with treats. Opt for the CO2 extraction method.
  • Purchase a full-spectrum CBD oil. These may be combined with CBG, CBN, and CBDA to work simultaneously to help with pain and anxiety, to reduce tumor growth, to help with skin conditions like hot spots, and to also reduce bacteria and help with other health issues like seizures.
  • CBD liquids work much faster.
  • Always check the potency of the CBD oil prior to purchasing, and consult with your veterinarian. There are several potencies to meet the needs of dogs of all sizes and ages.
  • CBD tinctures with droppers are easiest to use and are flavored for dogs.
  • Purchase organic, USDA certified hemp. There are specific strains grown for pets like the PR-33.
  • Chronic illnesses and pain may do better with CBD oil use, while CBD dog treats may work for anxiety and mild joint pain.
  • Opt for a pet CBD line that offers an “entourage effect” by using lots of volatile hemp and terpenes in their CBD formulations.

Full- Spectrum Hemp Oils Offers the Following:

  • Improved absorption and bioavailability
  •  Higher levels of CBD that need to be approved by your veterinarian first before use.
  • Rapid effect
  • Full Spectrum CBD oil must contain no contaminants, no carrier oils, no alcohol, and should be US or Canadian sourced and manufactured.
  • Can be easily added to your dog’s food or water
  • CBD oils are flavored and can be found in bacon, beef and cheese, and other dog favorite flavors.
  • Can opt for a highly concentrated full-spectrum phytocannabinoid that is a highly concentrated CBD herbal supplement for pets
  • Can administer drops directly into the dog’s mouth for rapid effect

CBD tinctures for pets are specifically geared for pain-relief, as well as to maintain and improve your dog’s health. Look for a USDA certified hemp that is organically grown in Colorado.  CBD oil is more concentrated, and specifically targets dogs that may benefit from a higher CBD dose. It’s necessary to read the potency and dosage instructions carefully because all CBD pet products are different.

Are CBD Dog Treats as Effective?

It’s only going to become more difficult to wade through all the numerous pet CBD products as time goes on because the CBD pet market is constantly expanding.

All too often, you’ll also notice that many of these CBD pet products are not veterinarian approved, and may not be made in the US or Canada. If you look at CBD dog treats, you’ll notice that there are so many CBD dog treat brands to choose from. Most start off with 5mg CBD per treat. That said, CBD is known to be 100% safe via short –term research, yet it may cause drowsiness, itchiness, and vomiting as a side-effect.

You may fall for clever marketing, unique packaging without questioning what’s really inside your pet’s CBD product. Your holistic veterinarian will determine how best to treat your dog’s joint, pain, anxiety and other health issues by evaluating your dog’s condition and pain level first.

With CBD tinctures, you get to give the correct dosage when needed, and with CBD dog treats you’ll have to wait for your furry best friend to consume the CBD dog treat first, and then to digest it.

Bioavailability of a CBD Product

A study from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem found that cannabidiol can be more effective than commercial drugs for anti-inflammation treatment.“Cannabidiol (CBD) has been the focus of many medical cannabis studies and continues to prove itself as a powerful anti-inflammatory drug. What makes CBD even more desirable for some patients is that it does not cause the psychoactive effects associated with tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).”

When giving your pet CBD, you’ll need to examine the bioavailability of the product. That said, consulting with your veterinarian for the best dosage for your dog makes the most sense.

On the other hand, CBD edibles for pets make life much easier. You can opt for natural, vegan, and non-GMO CBD dog treats, but since they need to be digested first, dog treats take longer to have an effect.

Heat also may reduce the effectiveness of CBD oil during the manufacturing process in dog treats. Your dog may not like the texture or flavor of the treat, and another pet in the household may consume the treat later on. When feeding a CBD dog treat, you’re going to have to ensure that your dog has consumed the treat and that it’s not left lying around for children or other pets to consume.

A research study from Israel has demonstrated that there is a bell-shaped dose-response to pure, single-molecule cannabidiol when given orally or intraperitoneally as a purified product.

The study adds that“Healing was only observed whenCBD was given within a very limited dose range, whereas no beneficial effect was achieved at either lower or higher doses.” This may pose problems when treating certain conditions in pets. That said, pet parents need to consult with their veterinarians every step of the way.

This includes issues with their dog’s behavior like aggression, anxiety, compulsive disorders, thunderstorm phobias, noise phobias, urine marking, cognitive dysfunction

Even if your furry best friend seems fine with CBD dog treats or after the use of a CBD dog tincture, you will still need to consult with your holistic veterinarian. You may need to reconsider adding traditional pharmaceuticals or supplements, tweaking your dog’s diet, increasing or decreasing your dog’s exercise schedule, before seeing an improvement in things like anxiety or depression.

Keeping your furry best friend mentally stimulated with plenty of trips to the beach, dog parks, and having fun with overnight hiking trips, positive dog training, and doggie play-dates mean having a happy and content doggo! We love our dogs, but keeping them happy and healthy means taking big steps in ensuring the body and mental health!
